Jerry Helle
At a very young age, I became aware of my differences to others, as well as to those of my siblings. Confronted early with an inability to relate to my peers, I immediately learned to express myself through art—visualizing the complexity within and finding liberation through the art of creation.
Spending most of my time amongst the elderly, I benefited from their wisdom and nostalgic perspective on life and through which I made meaning of my own experienced reality, which later became the focus of my artistic work. My art is heavily influenced by the conflicting value systems I encountered, the dynamics of my family's history, postcolonial ideas, spirituality, my home in Cameroon, and what is now my home overseas.
I like to work in abstraction since its deliberate reduction is essential and is central to my artistic identity. Through textures, forms, and colors, I display my awareness of my physical, spiritual, and emotional reality. I currently live and work in Houston-Texas. Prior to that, I lived between Cologne in Germany, Lisbon in Portugal, and Douala in Cameroon where I grew up. My works have been displayed throughout Germany and published in the United Kingdom. My conversation with Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Art Magazine will be published soon. The magazine will be shown as a limited edition ArtBook in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon, and will be sold internationally.
